Silage |
First cut of silage
| It's time to make silage at Lochdhu. During the summer we close off certain fields on the farm and let the grass grow really long. Just as the seed heads start to appear we cut the grass with a big mower, then lift it and chop it and blow it into a trailer with a forage harvester, and then dump it all in a big pit. The grass then ferments over the next few months and comes out as silage that we feed to the animals during the winter months when there is no fresh grass. |
