Goats can look very like sheep but are much hardier animals. Many goats are found on desolate mountainsides living off the tussocks of grass to be found there. Goats and sheep belong to the same family of animals and there are many similarities between the two although sheep have developed more over the centuries due to farming techniques. Many sheep have a goat like appearance and vice versa.

| They come in many colours, shapes and sizes but are less popular on the commercial farm than sheep. Goats in this country are mainly kept for their milk which is most often used to make cheese. Angorra goats are kept for their wool to make clothing. Goats are generally herd animals and need to be with other goats or they will be lonely.

They are very hardy creatures and will try to eat almost anything. Most are quite tame and will approach human beings. Sheep on the other hand tend to run away. A female goat is called a doe or a nanny goat. A male goat is called a buck or a billy goat and babies are called kids.

Most goats have shorter coats than sheep although some such as the Angorra does have a very long coat. Angorra wool is much softer than sheep wool and is used for high quality clothing such as pullovers and coats. Because there is not that many goats about it tends to be quite scarce to find and is therefore quite expensive.

Goats are found wild throughout the world particularly in mountaineous regions. The live among the rocky outcrops and have to be very sure footed as they clamber across the rocky terrain. They will try to eat almost anything!
