10 weeks after Tupping we scan the Ewes using an Ultrasound machine, similar to he ones used on Human mothers. Firstly to see if they are pregnant, but more importantly for their welfare to see how many lambs they are carrying.

Sheep are regularly drenched in water based fluids which contain chemicals designed to kill parasites which can live on the sheeps body causing harm to the sheep. Sheep dips come in various designs. Historically sheep dips were long troughs in the ground which sheep had to swim through to get out of the other end.

An area in the farm where sheep can be managed effectively by the use of sheep runs which funnel the sheep into single file.

Grass that has been chopped up into 30 - 40cm. lengths, piled up in a heap with a plastic sheet over the top to exclude all the air, and left to ferment for about 4 months. The grass is really just pickled in its own juices and because of the acidity does not decompose. This is the main feed for all the animals at Adoptafarm.

Silo Bin |

The silo bin is a tall container in which different farm products can be kept. Farmer Bob keeps his sheep feed in one within the yard at LochDhu. The silo has a chute at the bottom out of which comes whatever is inside. The weight of the sheep feed forces it out of the silo when Farmer Bob opens the chute door.

Snacker |

The snacker is a small trailer which is pulled behind the four wheel motorbike. The snacker is filled from the silo bin with sheep feed and taken out to the fields where it is turned on and deposits a small amaount of sheep feed every few metres as the bike and traler move along. The sheep recognise the snacker and run towards Farmer Bob when he enters the field on the bike pulling the snacker.

A disease in young lambs caused by their mother being deficient in copper during pregnancy. As a result the lamb's spine fails to develop fully and it's back legs appear weak. Injecting or drenching the Ewes 2 months before lambing will cure the problem.
